(PCM) Scientists in China have created the very first glow-in-the-dark pigs…and yes, you did read that correctly. The pigs emit an ever so slightly creepy fluorescent green light and were created in the hopes of finding new ways to create less costly and more efficient medicines for humans.
A similar experiment was conducted in Turkey that resulted in the creation of glow-in-the-dark rabbits. Much the same as with the pigs, the research is a major first step to producing medicine for genetic diseases. There are also plans in the works for another experiment to create fluorescent sheep.
What gives these animals the incredibly strange ability to glow, is that their embryos were injected with DNA from a jellyfish that creates the glowing effect when they are placed under UV or black light. The experiment ultimately reveals to scientists that genetic material injected into embryos was indeed incorporated into the animals make-up, as proven with the glow-in-the-dark results.
The scientist claim that the animals are in no way harmed or suffer any ill effects from having the embryos injected with the fluorescent protein and have the exact same life span as the would without the protein.
Still, seems to be a bit creepy to have a bunch of glow-in-the-dark animals running around, but hey it’s all in the name of science…right?
